The All Blacks Vs The Great Houghton

Girls’ Team’s Valiant Effort Falls Just Short in Epic Saturday Fixture.

JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG – September 13, 2025 – In a match that will be remembered for its breathtaking finish and its powerful message, the Houghton Cricket Academy U11 team narrowly edged out The All Blacks by 7 runs in a high-scoring thriller to claim the victory.

The result, however, tells only half the story. The true narrative was one of courage, skill, and a spirited fight against the odds, as The All Blacks, an all-girls team from the township, went toe-to-toe with a predominantly boys’ team from Houghton, pushing them to the absolute limit.

Batting first, Houghton Academy posted a formidable total of 260/5 from their 25 overs, thanks to some explosive batting. Daniel Winks led the charge, retiring on superb 51 runs from just 31 balls. He was ably supported by Rehan Imran, who blasted a rapid 50 off 24 deliveries before a run-out ended his entertaining innings.

The All Blacks’ bowlers faced a daunting task but never gave up. Nandipha Philiso was the pick of the attack, claiming 2 wickets for 25 runs in her 3 overs, while Thandile Bobotjine and Asiphile Tsotso also chipped in with crucial wickets.

In response, The All Blacks launched a fearless assault on the Houghton target. They batted with a confidence that belied their underdog status, silencing any doubters with every boundary. Musibudi Mangena set the tone with a magnificent 69 off 38 balls, a innings packed with 12 fours and a six. After Mogoboya Moagi retired hurt, Asiphile Tsotso (49) and Thandile Bobotjine (51 not out) kept the pressure firmly on the Houghton bowlers, stitching together a partnership that brought the girls’ team agonizingly close to a historic victory.

The required run rate was always within reach, thanks in part to a costly 42 wides from the Houghton bowling unit. Needing 8 runs from the final over with wickets in hand, the tension was palpable. Ultimately, Houghton’s experience at the death prevailed, restricting The All Blacks to 253/2 after 24.4 overs, securing a nail-biting 7-run win.

While Daniel Winks (1 wicket) and Ayaan Imran (1 wicket) were the successful bowlers for Houghton, the real story was the breathtaking chase mounted by The All Blacks.

This match was a magnificent advertisement for junior-level development cricket at South Africa Cricket Academy. It demonstrated that talent and fighting spirit know no boundaries of gender or background. The All Blacks, through their skillful and fearless performance, have not only won the hearts of everyone present but have also powerfully broken-down stereotypes, proving they belong on the biggest stages the game has to offer.

Post-Match Takeaway:
Though they fell just short of victory, The All Blacks won something far more significant: immense respect and a statement that will resonate throughout cricketing communities. Their performance is a testament to the growing depth of talent in township cricket and a bright sign for the future of the women’s game in South Africa.
